CSUK Helps London School Go Digital
The Royal Docks Community School with 80 staff members and 1,200 pupils has improved its ability to respond to emergency situations and control unruly behaviour using Motorola’s DTR 2430 and 2450 Series licence-free digital radios. Located in Newham, East London, Royal Docks opened in 1999 and prides itself on providing a 21st century teaching environment for pupils aged between 11 and 16. Using the DTR radios has improved the efficiency of patrol staff, their assistants and all supervisory teams and built a communication network around the entire school campus to boost safety and security.
CSUK supplied the radios to Royal Docks that was looking for a cost-effective easy-to-use solution to enable staff to communicate instantly on a one-to-one or one-to-many basis. Teachers patrolling the grounds during break times use DTR 2430s, worn on a belt clip, to keep in touch with colleagues and summon immediate assistance if they need help. Equipping the school’s welfare officer with a radio ensures that first aid arrives faster in the event of an accident or injury. The head teacher and members of the school’s leadership team use Motorola DTR 2450s, with their enhanced management capabilities such as setting up caller lists and the ability to disable radios remotely to prevent unauthorised use if they are mislaid or stolen. In addition to improving day-to-day efficiency and controlling the whereabouts of students, the radios also play an important role in marshalling sporting and other school events, which helps improve both pupil safety and the security of the premises. DTR Series Radios Deliver Functionality without Cost or Commitment Royal Docks chose the DTR Series radios after a demonstration from CSUK who visited the school to advise on a suitable solution and loaned analogue and digital radios for staff to try. “The range of features offered by the DTR radios met our needs completely,” says Janice Biggs, Personal Assistant to the Head Teacher Sean McGrath. “The radios give us the functionality we want while being easy to use and without the commitment of monthly fees or contracts.” The DTR Series also offer superior in-building coverage in comparison with analogue radios, while enhanced audio quality enables users to communicate in busy areas of the school with a lot of background noise. Text messaging is also available, with 10 pre-set messages that users can change to suit their preferences. A long battery life of up to 20 hours cuts time spent charging the radios and the DTR’s frequency hopping spread spectrum prevents risk of eavesdropping by other local radio users.
